Well microsoft sold Nokia with a stipulation that they had to stay out of smartphones for a few years, and kept all Nokias talent.

Uh...You know when MS bought the Nokia phone brand they were always going to rename it, right?
MS has rights to the Nokia brand for a few more years, and they are still selling Nokia phones overseas, mostly the lower-tier models. The flagship models will get the MS/Lumia branding.
Meanwhile Nokia is still a company that deals with mapping software for various platforms. Their HERE maps on MS and Android phones is really very good. Nokia isn't dead. Nokia phones are.
And, that is all not to say I am also not saddened by this. My Nokia Lumia 920 is a great phone. I truly hope that MS kept enough of the right people to continue making phones of the same quality.

And another goddamn phone with (suspected) low-end specs. Give us a new damned flagship, Microsoft!

My Lumia 920 feeling its age. I still love it, and am content to continue using it, but they aren't going to tempt me to give them any money unless they have another flagship about the same size soon.

They are still working on synergies and stuff like that. If you need a new phone now, do what I'm doing, get the Xperia Z3.

I need a new phone (currently on a friend's old iphone 4 after shattering my 920). I really just want something thin and reasonably powerful. Need to go handle an 830 when they hit stores to see if it's worth it.

Nokia was always going to be "dead" as a smartphone manufacturer, of course. Microsoft purchased their hardware division. But they still do a lot of with mapping tech, imaging tech, and cellular infrastructure - something no one ever really thinks about.

I got so impatient, I just said fuck it and bought a 1520.3 to replace my pentaband Lumia 920.

Saw an 830 review against the 920-series, not really worth the upgrade. Though, as you're without one it might be a good bet. About equal performance in most tests, though the newer processor does help, but only slightly.
The 920's camera is loads better.

I had one of these as my first ever phone, back when I was around eleven. It had an awesome Taz the Tasmanian Devil case, and I still use it as a backup phone.
...
I realise this is a daft thing to say, but it feels a little like losing an old friend.

The camera trade-off is really my big bugaboo right now. I like the form factor of the 830, but I really do enjoy having a great camera. At the point of reaching the size and weight of the 920, though, I feel like I might as well just go whole-hog and get the 1020.

Well, call me a badge snob, but I wouldn't jump and buy stuff from a company that didn't even existed a year ago.

That doesn't make you a badge snob that makes you cautious which is fair enough but remember all the big guys had to start somewhere. Plus at Ł269 (or your regional equivalent) it was a small risk which ultimately paid off.

Yes, but it's not Windows Phone.
Hate all you want, but WP is actually very good. And Android is beyond frustrating to use. I have one for work and I hate it.

True, but the problem with the 1020 is that it's also growing old. I had thought that was the same route I was going to take as well, but now I'm not so sure. I don't really need that good a camera on my phone. More often than not, when I'd want it, I am driving anyway and it's not safe to try taking a pic to begin with. I also don't really take many pics with my phone.
I suppose I would find reasons to do so with a camera as good as the 1020, but I am still worried it will feel just as old and the same issues with performance. My 920 has developed a habit of needing to "resume" frequently now that I am on 8.1 Update 1 Dev Preview. Where as before it was super snappy and quick to open, close, and switch tasks.
Here is the comparo I was talking about in my first reply. http://www.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-83…

I still have the Sony W350. And works.
If only wasn't so primitive, by today's standards.

Nice! Yeah, it's funny how much people expect from their devices nowadays...especially when so many just use it as a camera/text/candy crush gadget.
My old duster still makes (relatively) clear voice calls and can store thousands of text messages. The battery life is still pretty good, too. So I keep using it, and paying an average of $20 a month- much to my carrier's chagrin, no doubt!

I don't use the W350, because I need the all new stuff you get in the modern Xperia phones, but the W350 is a nice relic to have around. I like how the Z3 is as large as a few W350 phones, put together.

I'm with ADabofOppo. I don't mind Android, but I really enjoy the WP environment and would like to stick with it. Were I to go Android, the Z3 would probably be my choice, though.

And that's why I haven't pulled the trigger on the 1020: simply can't justify buying a phone that's already a generation behind.
